Ruru (Morepork) is a small dark brown native owl with beige and brown mottled front and typically large owl eyes.
It is nocturnal, eating a variety of insects and small animals such as rats, mice and smaller birds. Ruru is mainly found in forested areas from sea level to high country.
Often heard: Ruru has a variety of calls but derives its common name from the iconic call that sounds like "more-pork"
It is quite hard to spot because it is nocturnal, hidden in forested areas and possesses eeerily silent flight.
We have a Ruru living at the back of our urban but well planted property on one of the hills in Napier - beautiful sound and helps to keep any unwanted rodents under control!
