Product Overview
NZ Paua fern frond pendant
There are two versions as to how the NZ Paua got its distinctive, unique colours -
version 1 / The intricate layers of blues, greens, pinks, and mauves found in paua result from its unique diet; these deep-sea jewels feast on brown and red algae and bladder kelp, contributing to its uniquely colourful shell.
Version 2 / Originally Paua had no shell. Tangaroa, god of the sea, could see how difficult this made life for Paua and so takes pity on him and gives Paua a dazzling shell of many colours. But the jealousy of the other sea creatures results in Paua still being miserable, so Tangaroa decides to hide his beauty within his shell, where only he can see it.
