Product Overview
Weka are a large (about the size of a chicken) flightless brown bird, which are well known for their curious and feisty personalities. They can be found in forests, sub-alpine grasslands, sand dunes and rocky shores. Weka are omnivores and enjoy a diet of berries and seeds as well as worms, beetles, spiders and even frogs and mice. They build their nests on the ground under the cover of thick vegetation and, if food is plentiful, they can raise up to four broods a year. In addition to their scavenging behaviour putting them at risk, Weka are also threatened by predators including ferrets, stoats and rats. They are classified as a vulnerable species.
