Kingfishers are a medium sized bird (approx 20cm), that have beautiful turquoise feathers and large black bills. Kingfishers are found throughout New Zealand in a wide range of habitats, from farmland to rocky coastlines, their main requirement being an elevated observation post to hunt from.
Kingfisher are often seen sitting patiently on power-lines waiting for their next meal; catching their prey of beetles, spiders, tadpoles or crabs and then returning to their perch in one smooth movement.
Kingfishers nest in trees and cliffs by chiseling out a tunnel and chamber with their beaks.
