Morepork or Ruru, are a small dark brown native owl, with a beige and brown mottled front and typically large owl eyes. They are nocturnal, eating a variety of insects and small animals such as rats, miceand smaller birds. They are mainly found in forested areas, anywhere from sea level to high country. Tey derive their common name from the iconic call that sounds like "more-pork". Â
