The story behind Pania
Pania of the Reef is a treasured figure in Napier’s Māori legends. In the story, Pania is a sea maiden who falls in love with Karitoki and returns to him each evening, answering the call of the ocean at sunrise. When he tries to keep her on land, she returns to the sea. Her story lives on in the reef off Napier and the well-known Pania statue on Marine Parade.
