The Great Spotted is the largest of all Kiwis, standing about 45cm tall and their eggs are the largest of all birds,relative to body size. They live in forested mountains, mostly in the subalpine zone from 700 to 1100m above sea level.  

They use a wide variety of habitats including grasslands, beech forests, podocarp/hardwood forests and scrub. Because their naturalhabitat is less hospitable to predators, they are able to maintain a morestable population base than other Kiwi.     
These Kiwis are highly aggressive and defend large territories against other kiwi. 
They can live up to 15 years, residing in up to 50 maze like burrows within their territory.
