About the Huia

The Huia (Heteralocha acutirostris) was one of New Zealand's most remarkable native birds and is now sadly extinct.

Found only in the forests of New Zealand's North Island, the Huia was famous for its glossy black plumage, brilliant orange wattles and distinctive white-tipped tail feathers.

It was also unique because the male and female had dramatically different beaks—the greatest difference between sexes of any bird species in the world. Males used their shorter, stronger bills to break into decaying wood, while females used their long curved bills to reach insect larvae hidden deep within timber.

To Māori, the Huia was regarded as a treasured taonga. Its striking white tail feathers were worn by chiefs and people of high status as symbols of leadership, prestige and mana.

Sadly, habitat loss, introduced predators and excessive hunting led to its extinction in the early 1900s. Today, the Huia remains one of New Zealand's most recognised conservation symbols and serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our unique wildlife.
