And Justice for All is the fourth studio album by the American heavy metal band Metallica, released on 7 September 1988. It was the band's first full-length studio album to feature bassist Jason Newsted following the death of Cliff Burton in 1986
The album is known for its progressive metal elements, featuring long, complex song structures and fast tempos. Lyrically, it departs from the band's earlier themes to focus on political and legal injustices, such as government corruption, censorship, and the horrors of war.
Production and Controversy
The album is famously controversial amongst fans and critics alike for its production—specifically the nearly inaudible bass guitar.
- The "No Bass" Mix: Producers and engineers have stated that drummer Lars Ulrich and frontman James Hetfield specifically instructed them to turn the bass down until it was barely audible, then drop it a further 3 decibels.
