Product Overview

Metallica T-Shirt with the iconic electric chair.

The "blue electric chair" is the iconic imagery from the cover of Metallica's second studio album, Ride the Lightning, released in 1984. The artwork depicts an empty electric chair suspended in a dark blue sky, being struck by lightning bolts that flow from the glowing band logo.

Key Facts About the Imagery

  • Meaning: The phrase "ride the lightning" is slang for execution by electric chair. Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett took the title from a passage in Stephen King's novel The Stand.
  • The Green Misprint: In France, a printing error by Bernett Records resulted in about 400 copies of the album having a green cover instead of blue. These are now rare and highly valuable collectors' items.
  • Design Inspiration: The chair on the cover is noted for its similarity to the one used at New York's Sing Sing prison, which was the deadliest electric chair in history.
